Salad: vinho vedere Loreiro, vinho leve de Lisboa. Pro move: quinta da pilota moscatel Roxo
Asian spicy: spicy loves sweet wine.
Grilled steak: for comfort go for Douro red or Alentejo. Pro more: Baga reserva.
Italian food (tomato based): acid loves acid. But some structure is nice too. Think more continental climate than just Atlantic. If you are having a pizza or pasta at lunch perhaps a Dao red will do. A Vinhas Velhas white also. Pro move: Big huge powerful Douro 14% plus. Just be ready for bed afterwards. This is the ultimate comfort experience.
Fish(white): dourada, robalo, carapaus, sardines. If on a sunny day you will probably indulge in several bottles. Perhaps start with a vinho verde. Then if cooking the fish simply ( garlic, olive oil, lemon) you can keep with that theme or go for perhaps an Arinto de Bucelas. If the fish is more buttery (bacalhao, sole) try for something Oaked perhaps and Alentejo or Douro white. Pro tip: Dao Taborabdella Encruzado
When in doubt just go for something of whatever region you are in. Regional cooking and regional wines go together beach umbrellas and sunny days. They are products from the soul of a place. Each represents and aspect of what the place is. You can hardly go wrong with that.
